Abstract

The emerging discipline of medicine is based on the use of the so-called “biologics”, or biological drugs. These are chemical elements that are produced by microorganisms and would be very difficult to obtain by other chemical means. Recently many organisms biochemical network is reconstructed in a genome-scale, containing all of the known metabolic reactions which occurs in the given phenotype, and one can have access to it and make various statistics and calculations in a rather simplified manner. The authors of this website provides insight of the necessary informatics tools and online resources to get started with a project related to the metabolic network of entire organisms and their role in producing biopharmaceuticals. By understanding the fundamental driving principles of the operation of microorganisms and the possibilities of controlling them by applying different chemical constraints may help one to optimize pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, modern medicine and even get closer to understanding the basics of our existence.
